Parking guidance in Riga International Airport

Parking guidance in Riga International Airport

Riga International Airport is not only Latvia’s largest airport but also a key air traffic hub for the entire Baltic region and Northern Europe. As passenger volumes continue to grow, so does the need for streamlined, user-friendly infrastructure—starting with parking.

Recognizing the impact of efficient parking on the overall travel experience, Riga Airport partnered with BISS to implement a cutting-edge parking guidance system in its P3 long-term parking zone. This project builds on a trusted partnership that began in 2010.

Project Overview

In 2024, BISS deployed a camera-based parking guidance solution powered by real-time free space recognition technology. The system leverages the airport’s existing CCTV network to detect occupancy across more than 2,000 spaces and guide drivers directly to available areas.

To enhance user experience, navigational displays were installed at entry points, showing available rows and reducing search time. The solution enables faster parking, reduces congestion, and aligns with RIX’s smart airport vision.

Key Features

  • AI-powered parking occupancy detection using 24 existing CCTV cameras
  • Real-time display updates via 3 outdoor screens placed at strategic entry points
  • Coverage of 2,148 parking spots across 66 defined areas
  • No in-ground sensors required—based fully on video stream analysis
  • Fully GDPR-compliant, relying on metadata only
  • Minimal disruption during installation with scalable architecture

Impact & Results

  • Faster parking: Drivers are guided directly to available areas
  • Lower emissions: Reduced circling leads to up to 35% CO₂ reduction
  • Higher throughput: Better flow during peak periods and flight waves
  • Operational visibility: Real-time zone occupancy for airport managers
  • Future readiness: Flexible system aligned with smart airport expansion
